DESIGN APPROACH

The rapidly changing conditions of our time are steadily weakening architecture’s relationship with place. Buildings that look alike on a global scale repeat the same forms in very different geographies. In response, Toker Mimarlık begins every project by reading anew the particular conditions of its place.

The design process opens with research into the topography, climate, light and surrounding fabric of the site. At this stage there is no predetermined form or style; the project grows out of the answers to the questions that the place and the programme ask together.

Material is the most important carrier of these answers. We prefer honest, low-maintenance materials that grow more beautiful with time, such as local stone, timber and exposed concrete. Detail is the smallest-scale design decision: it determines how these materials come together and shapes the character of the building.

We carry our projects from the first idea to the completion of construction with the same team. This continuity ensures that the original intention of the design is realised on site without being lost.

“I like to look at a place, understand it, feel its traces — and only then begin to design.”
